6LC’s Walk to explore our local environment
Last week, 6LC went on a 2 mile walk through the ‘land beyond the school field’ which is being developed into a public nature reserve. This is the third walk they've been on, choosing a different pathway each time. On our walks, we have seen evidence of horses and foxes through the paw prints and trails that have been left in the mud. Also, we’ve heard the sweet birdsong of the skylark. Last week, we started to see the sights of spring with the beginning of the catkins coming out on the silver birch trees and leaf buds starting to open on some trees. We’ve even made it as far as the seawall and seen different types of ships that are travelling down the River Thames to the Thames Gateway Port. During the walks, the children have had the opportunity to assess the risk assessment and discuss how these are created and adapted for different activities. They’ve also taken some great pictures of different sights they have seen and things in the environment that have wowed them. This term, in computing, our children have been learning about the following Year 2 have been looking data collecting. This week we focused on analysing and creating tally charts. We have learnt to count, compare and enter data using a pictogram. We discussed how it is challenging to count and retain data. So we learnt to make our own tally charts using pictures. We were then introduced to pictograms. We found out that a pictogram is a way of representing data using images. Year 3 have been learning about coding using Scratch. One of our pupils has reflected “We looked at the programming blocks, programming area and stage. We investigated adding and deleting sprites and how to add sounds. I enjoyed making sprites and backgrounds. I learnt how to code and screen shot.” Year 4 have enjoyed using Turtle academy which has been fun for the children. Year 5 have been learning to code using physical computing devices. They have been learning to use MicroBits. One of our pupils wrote in their learning reflection: Today I used a micro:bit to enhance my computing knowledge of devices and coding. We used an application called ‘MakeCode’ which has similarities with the well-known coding website ‘Scratch’. I made numbers, ticks and music on the micro:bit using the Chromebooks. It was fun to create animals, shapes and music with a simple but revolutionary and industrious device. I felt it was highly enjoyable. Additionally, it was amusing to create weird technical crashing sound effects. Year 6 have been looking at coding too, this has included learning about a variable as things that are changeable.
This week, Y4 have been working extra hard on their times tables as our school have joined a TTRS (Times Tables Rock Stars) inter-school tournament, where we are competing against other schools in the Osborne Trust. We are doing really well so far, keep up the good work Y4! Having a good understanding and fast recall of the times tables up to 12x12 is essential for all areas of maths. If you know your times tables really well, all aspects of maths are easy to understand and you will become a brilliant mathematician!
In Maths this week, we have focused on counting in 2s. At first, it was a little tricky for us to count in 2s as we are familiar with counting in ones but we soon became confident at it. We listened to some songs about counting in 2s and used some of our body parts which we have 2 of to support our learning of counting in 2s. We engaged with a range of pictorial and concrete representations which were useful learning aids to counting in 2s. Furthermore, we grouped objects in 2s and counted how many groups of two there were.
1BA thoroughly enjoyed their lesson this week and here are some of their thoughts to share with you. Mason – liked when we counted in 2s. Emma – liked when we searched for patterns. Ollie - liked how we used our body parts to count in 2s. Jacob – liked when we found missing numbers on number tracks. James M – liked when we were talking about body parts that we have 2 of. Olivia – liked when we grouped objects in 2s. Imaani – liked when we were completing our tasks. PE this term sees year groups complete in the following sports
Reception- Ball skills Year 1- creative games and OAA Year 2- OAA and badminton skills year 3- OAA and creative games year 4- OAA and hockey year 5-Hockey and OAA year 6 OAA and badminton We will be competing in the 'Big Walk and Wheel' from the 20th March for the final two weeks of the term. Please encourage active travel to and from school. Year 5/6 football team have played really hard this term to complete all of their league games. They have gone unbeaten so far this season. We have also competed in the following SSP competitions this term Year 5/6 gymnastics we placed 10th out of 23 schools Year 1 and 2 competed and enjoyed their competition also. Year 3 and 4 have their competition on the 24th March. We also have The Thurrock SSP gymnastics on Friday 10th March for years 3 to 6. |
